From 1 August 2024, Barnett Waddingham LLP (BW) will be responsible for UMSS pensioner payroll. The first payroll administered by them will be paid on 29 August 2024.
You will receive a letter at your home address about this change in the coming weeks. It includes further information about Income Tax considerations, new contact details for BW and details of when you can register for Clarity, an online member portal.
Why the change?
The UMSS Trustee wanted to improve the payroll service provided to pensioner members. The University team will continue to assist with general benefit inquiries and manage all other aspects of the scheme.
How does this affect you?
Benefits under the Scheme are not affected. The transition to a new payroll provider is being carefully managed to ensure minimal disruption for you. Rest assured, the change will not impact the gross pension amount or the monthly payment schedule.
How will this impact Income Tax?
As part of this change, the PAYE reference at The University of Manchester will be replaced with a new PAYE reference from BW.
This change may result in HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) automatically adjusting your tax code, potentially affecting the amount of tax you pay. Payroll providers must follow HMRC's tax code instructions, and BW cannot make changes without HMRC's guidance. HMRC is expected to resolve any issues in the coming months. If you have any concerns, you can contact HRMC using the details on their website.
When will the change happen?
From August 2024, you’ll receive your payslips and P60s from BW. You’ll get an annual paper payslip to your home address after the annual pension increase in April. Additionally, a payslip will be provided if your gross pension changes by 5% or more in any given month.
